Barclays is warning customers about a potential spike in gambling transactions as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off next Thursday. The bank has observed that gambling activity surges during major sporting events, with the Grand National seeing a 53% increase in transactions above the daily average, and Premier League and FA Cup finals typically driving a 30% uplift.
Barclays Gambling Block Feature
Barclays offers a Gambling Block tool within its mobile app that stops most payments to gambling merchants. The feature includes a mandatory 72-hour cooling-off period before it can be removed, giving customers time to reconsider during moments of heightened temptation. Since its launch, the number of Gambling Blocks in place has increased by over 10%, reflecting positive customer response.
Support and Partnership with GamCare
Through a partnership with GamCare, Barclays customers can access independent specialist help. Over the past year (April 2025-2026), 621 GamCare website sessions were attributed to Barclays customers. Manuel Baldasano, Head of Customer & Digital at Barclays UK, said: “Placing a bet on a big sporting event can often add to the excitement, and for most, it can just be a bit of fun. But for others, events like the World Cup can make it harder to stay in control of their gambling. By combining simple in-app tools with direct pathways to specialist support, we’re helping customers make considered choices and access help when they need it.”
