Craig Gardner Leaves Birmingham City Director of Football Role
Craig Gardner Departs Birmingham City Director Role

Birmingham City have announced that Craig Gardner has stepped down from his position as Director of Football after five years in the role. The former Blues midfielder, who initially joined as technical director in 2021 before being promoted in February 2026, has been responsible for overseeing the football side of the business and managing the club's transfer dealings.

Gardner's Tenure and Contributions

During his time in both positions, Gardner operated as a one-man recruitment team for much of his tenure under previous owners Trillion Trophy Asia. Following Knighthead's takeover in July 2023, he was able to build a squad of transfer specialists. Gardner was also credited with playing a key role in Knighthead's acquisition of the club.

In the most recent season, Gardner led recruitment efforts that saw 18 players signed across two windows. Despite this, the club finished 10th, which Knighthead hoped would be improved upon. The 39-year-old also had two separate spells as a player for Blues, helping the club win the Carling Cup in 2011.

Gardner's Statement

Speaking to the club website, Gardner said: "It's been an honour for me to represent Birmingham City in multiple capacities. I've fulfilled my dream as a player to play in the Premier League for the club, to score the winning goal in the Carling Cup semi-final and then to go on and lift the trophy at Wembley. I then went into a coaching role and ultimately as Director of Football leading through periods of significant change. These are all moments I am immensely proud of. I've worked tirelessly to put the club back in a position for Premier League football and I believe that is not far away."

He added: "I'd like to thank the club and Knighthead for their support, and I'm excited to see the journey continue. To the fans, you have been a huge part as to why I've been here, you inspire us all and I thank you so much. I now look forward to some time with my family and then to joining you as a fan in the stadium. Keep right on."

CEO Jeremy Dale's Tribute

CEO Jeremy Dale said: "On behalf of everyone at Birmingham City, I would like to thank Craig for his outstanding contribution to this Football Club. When Craig first spoke to me about his desire to take time away from football at the end of the season, it was clear this was not a decision he had taken lightly. He has given an enormous amount to Birmingham City throughout his career and has played a significant role in the progress we have made over recent years. I am grateful that he has remained in post to help prepare the club for the summer and the season ahead. We fully respect Craig's decision and wish him every success in the future."

The club will now begin the search for a replacement Director of Football.
