Drivers Alerted: Car Insurance May Exclude Personal Belongings Coverage

Motorists across the UK are being warned that their car insurance policies may not provide coverage for personal items stolen from their vehicles, such as mobile phones, laptops, or important documents. An in-depth investigation by the consumer group Which? has uncovered that insurance coverage for possessions is often unclear and inconsistent, leaving many drivers at risk of significant financial loss.

Investigation Findings on Policy Exclusions

Which? conducted a comprehensive review of 66 car insurance policies in November, revealing that while most include some level of personal belongings cover, significant gaps exist. In their most recent survey of car insurance customers, one in ten claims involved burglary or theft, highlighting the prevalence of such incidents.

Key exclusions identified include:

  • None of the 55 policies with personal belongings cover analysed by Which? provided coverage for cash.
  • Fifteen percent of policies did not cover tablets, and the same proportion excluded laptops.
  • Sixteen percent of policies did not include mobile phones in their coverage.
  • The vast majority of policies did not cover credit cards (93%) or documents (98%).

Expert Advice for Drivers

Reena Sewraz, a Which? Money expert, emphasised the importance of careful policy review. She stated, "In the event of vehicle theft, many motorists may assume their car insurance will be on hand to cover any resulting losses – but when it comes to items left inside the car, that’s not always the case. Our analysis found common high-value items are often excluded from policies, and even where protection is included, payout limits can be so low that drivers still face a significant shortfall."

Sewraz advised drivers shopping for new policies to always check the terms and conditions thoroughly to ensure coverage meets their expectations. She also recommended considering other insurance options, such as home insurance, which might offer additional protection for valuables when away from home.

Industry Response and Safety Tips

Fraser Lyall, general insurance policy adviser at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), acknowledged the stress of theft and highlighted insurer commitments to customer support. He explained, "Comprehensive motor insurance will generally cover your vehicle and its contents, and many home insurance providers also offer optional add‑ons to protect belongings when you’re away from home."

Lyall encouraged motorists to take simple precautions to reduce theft risk, including:

  1. Avoid leaving high-value items in your car.
  2. Keep belongings out of sight.
  3. Ensure your vehicle is locked when unattended.

He added, "Motor insurance policies can differ in the features and benefits they offer, as people’s needs vary. Some policies may include limits or exclusions, so it’s essential that motorists take the time to understand their cover and ensure it meets their needs. If ever in doubt about what’s included, speak to your insurer who will be able to help."

This investigation serves as a crucial reminder for drivers to proactively assess their insurance coverage and take preventive measures to safeguard their belongings, ensuring they are not left vulnerable in case of theft.
