UK Drivers Urged to File Complaints for £7.5bn Car Loan Compensation
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued a pressing call to drivers across the United Kingdom, urging them to submit complaints as soon as possible to secure their share of the £7.5 billion car loan compensation scheme more quickly. This announcement follows the release of the final details for the planned redress programme, which aims to address mis-sold car finance agreements.
Eligible Contracts and Increased Payouts
In a significant update, the FCA has refined the scope of the compensation scheme, reducing the number of eligible loan agreements from an initial 14 million to 12.1 million contracts. This adjustment specifically covers loans that were agreed upon between the years 2007 and 2024. As a result of this narrowing, each eligible contract is now expected to receive a higher payout, with the average compensation increasing from approximately £700 to around £830, which includes accrued interest.
The FCA emphasized the importance of timely action, stating: “People who have already complained, or who complain before the end of the relevant implementation period, will be compensated sooner.” Lenders are required to inform complainants within three months after the implementation period concludes, detailing whether they are owed compensation and the exact amount.

Amid the rush to claim compensation, drivers have been cautioned about potential scams exploiting the situation. Confused.com issued a warning: “As with any large compensation scheme, scams are a risk. Be wary of unexpected contact, avoid signing up with multiple firms, and check the FCA register before dealing with any company.” The advice stresses taking a careful approach and sticking to trusted, official routes to avoid unnecessary costs and ensure rightful compensation is received.
