Santander Announces Closure of 26 UK Bank Branches in May

Santander, the prominent high street bank with branches in Birmingham, is set to close 26 of its locations across the United Kingdom by the end of May. This move is part of a broader restructuring effort driven by the increasing shift of customers toward online banking services.

Digital Shift Drives Branch Closures

The bank has cited that 96% of customer transactions are now conducted through digital platforms, leading to a reduced need for physical branches. Earlier this year, Santander confirmed the closure of 44 branches nationwide, with four shutting down in January. An additional 40 branches are scheduled to be axed by May's end, aligning with this digital transformation strategy.

Impact on Jobs and Previous Closures

These latest closures put 291 jobs at risk, continuing a trend of workforce reductions. In March 2025, Santander announced the closure of 95 branches, affecting 750 employees. Mike Regnier, the then UK chief executive, noted in July last year that 2,000 jobs had been lost in the preceding year due to restructuring, with further redundancies likely.

Community Banking Alternatives

To mitigate the impact on customers, Santander has pledged that affected branches will be succeeded by Community Bankers operating through Santander Local stores or shared banking hubs. This initiative aims to maintain access to essential banking services in areas impacted by the closures.
