Lidl is set to introduce plug-in solar panels to its UK stores as part of a major Net Zero initiative, with estimates suggesting households could save up to £110 annually on their energy bills. The discount retailer is collaborating with manufacturers like EcoFlow and other retailers such as Iceland, working alongside government bodies to bring this accessible technology to the British market.

Georgina Hall, Corporate Affairs Director at Lidl GB, emphasised the company's commitment to making sustainable living affordable. "We welcome the government's move to modernise regulations in the UK," she stated. "Updating the regulatory landscape for this 'plug-and-play' technology is a positive step towards empowering British households to manage their energy costs and support the nation's net-zero ambitions."
This technology, already popular across Europe with Germany seeing around 500,000 new devices installed yearly, allows users to generate free solar power directly through a standard mains socket. The absence of installation costs means households can immediately reduce their reliance on grid electricity, leading to significant bill reductions.

Dhara Vyas, Energy UK's chief executive, praised the initiative as part of the broader Future Homes Standard, calling it a "landmark moment for clean energy in Britain." She explained, "New homes built under this standard will benefit from clean heating solutions and solar, protecting households from volatile gas prices and putting energy security within the home itself."
Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, added that expanding solar energy and battery storage offers a rapid and cost-effective solution to the energy crisis. "From the largest installations to the smallest domestic systems, every battery and panel counts towards weaning us off reliance on imported and polluting fossil fuels," he noted.
