The West Midlands is bracing for significant disruption as Storm Goretti is forecast to bring heavy snow across the region this evening, Thursday, January 8, 2026. In response, pubs are taking varied approaches, with some prioritising staff safety through early closures and others transforming into community safe havens for those vulnerable to the severe conditions.
Early Closures for Staff Safety
An Amber weather warning for snow is active from 8pm tonight until 9am on Friday, January 9. With significant travel disruption expected, public transport operators including Network Rail and National Highways have advised against non-essential journeys.
This has prompted several hospitality venues to act. The Fox at Shipley in Wolverhampton confirmed it will shut its doors early. A statement on its Facebook page explained the decision: “Today 8th January we will be closing early due to snow warning. This is to allow our staff to get home safely before we get hit.” The pub's last booking was set for 5:30pm.
Pubs Opening as Community Safe Havens
In contrast, other establishments are emphasising their role as community hubs. The Cabin Public House in Sedgley, Dudley, announced it will remain open to offer a ‘safe place’ for anyone vulnerable during the storm.
“We’ll be here for anyone who may need a warm, safe place — as long as you’re able to get to us safely,” the pub stated online. They promised heating, free mince pies, hot drinks, and a friendly face for those feeling the cold, struggling with heating costs, or feeling isolated. The Railway Inn in Shenstone, Lichfield, issued a similar offer, providing free tea and biscuits.
Both venues stressed that public safety is paramount, urging people only to travel if they can do so safely and noting that opening times may change later to ensure staff can also get home.
Advice for the Public
For those considering venturing out this evening, the advice is clear:
- Call your local pub ahead to confirm they are open and check their planned closing time.
- Monitor social media pages or websites for real-time updates from venues.
- Do not take unnecessary risks with travel in the severe weather.
The divergent responses from West Midlands pubs highlight the dual challenge of maintaining operational safety for workers while supporting local communities facing the brunt of Storm Goretti and the associated dangerous travelling conditions.
