The popular UK pub chain Wetherspoons has announced plans to expand its footprint across Britain, with five new locations scheduled to open by the beginning of 2026.
New Locations Revealed
Bosses at the bargain pub brand have confirmed a fresh wave of openings, responding to customer speculation about where new branches might appear. According to reports, the next areas set to welcome a Wetherspoons are:
- Bristol
- Croydon
- Stockton-on-Tees
- Beaconsfield
- Wetherby
This expansion will add to the chain's existing portfolio of over 800 branches throughout the United Kingdom.
Local Heritage Inspires Design
The company has emphasized that each new venue will be uniquely designed to reflect its local area's character and heritage. A spokesperson for Wetherspoons stated: "Inspired by local history, each pub has its own design, character and personality."
This approach is already evident in recent openings, including The New Moor Farm in Cramlington, Northumberland, which has begun serving customers and incorporates design elements celebrating its local roots.
Closures Balance Expansion
While the chain expands into new areas, some existing locations face closure. The Water Gate in Barnstaple closed its doors on Sunday, November 9, after being put up for sale.
Four other Wetherspoons pubs have been identified as being at risk of closure:
- The Babington Arms in Derby
- The Kentish Drovers in Peckham
- The Grey Friar in Preston
- The William Jameson in Sunderland
The company continues to seek additional sites for future development while managing its current estate, maintaining its position as one of Britain's most recognizable pub chains.
