UK Car Sales Shake-Up: Ford Loses Top Spot After Three Years
New research based on March sales data has unveiled a significant shift in the UK automotive market, with Ford being toppled from its long-held position as the country's best-selling car brand. The Chinese-built SUV, the Jaecoo 7, has claimed the crown, marking the end of Ford Puma's three-year reign at the top.
Record-Breaking Month for Electric Vehicles
March proved to be a landmark month for electric vehicles (EVs), with registrations soaring to 196,059 units. Despite this impressive figure, industry leaders have raised concerns about the pace of the transition to zero-emission vehicles.
Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), highlighted the challenges facing the industry. "Much of March's performance will be from orders placed before the start of the Iran conflict, which threatens to raise the cost of living, undermining consumer confidence," he stated.
Hawes emphasized the urgency of reviewing the transition to electric vehicles, noting that EV market share stood at about 22% last month - significantly below the Government's Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate requiring at least 33% of cars sold by each manufacturer to be zero-emission this year.
Government Response and Support Measures
A spokesperson for the Department for Transport outlined the government's efforts to support businesses in the transition to electric vehicles. "Our Electric Car Grant is making EVs cheaper and more accessible than ever," they said.
The spokesperson detailed specific initiatives: "Over 85,000 drivers have already saved up to £3,750 when buying a new EV, and we're saving renters £500 off the cost of installing home chargers - unlocking cheaper charging rates for residents. With global price fluctuations at the petrol pumps, making the switch has never made more sense."
