BrewDog to Shut 38 Bars and Cut 484 Jobs After US Firm's £33m Rescue Deal
BrewDog Closes 38 Bars, Cuts 484 Jobs in US Takeover

BrewDog Announces Major Bar Closures and Job Cuts Following US Takeover

BrewDog has confirmed it will close 38 bars across the UK, resulting in the loss of 484 jobs, despite a rescue acquisition by an American firm. The craft beer company, which fell into administration on Monday, has been purchased by Tilray Brands, a US-based producer of medicinal cannabis and craft beer, in a £33 million deal.

Details of the Tilray Acquisition and Its Impact

Tilray Brands has acquired several key BrewDog assets, including the global brand and associated intellectual property, the UK brewing operation, and 11 pub venues in the UK and Ireland. However, administrators have stated that this transaction will lead to the closure of the majority of BrewDog's bars, with 38 set to shut immediately and 484 employees facing redundancy. In contrast, BrewDog's 18 franchise bars in the UK and internationally will remain open.

The deal will see Tilray assume control of BrewDog facilities such as the brewery in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, and The Hop Hub distribution centre in Motherwell, Lanarkshire. It will also safeguard 733 jobs in the UK, with staff transitioning to Tilray. The brewer, famous for craft beers like Punk IPA and Elvis Juice, closed its pubs on Monday as the takeover was finalised.

Administration Process and Investor Concerns

In February, consultants from AlixPartners were brought in to conduct a strategic review and oversee the sale process. On Monday, insolvency experts from AlixPartners were appointed as administrators after weeks of negotiations. Founder James Watt was among those involved in discussions to secure a takeover.

The uncertainty surrounding BrewDog had raised concerns among investors who participated in the "equity for punks" crowdfunding campaigns, which ran until 2021. Administrators confirmed that all equity holders, including these investors, will receive nothing from the transaction.

Clare Kennedy, a partner and managing director at AlixPartners, said: "As one would expect over the past two weeks, we have received significant interest in the BrewDog business from prospective buyers across both the trade and investment communities. In Tilray, we have secured a purchaser with a passion for craft brewing who will be an excellent custodian and sponsor of the business in the months and years ahead."

Reactions from Officials and Unions

Harriet Cross, MP for Gordon and Buchan, where BrewDog is headquartered, described the redundancies as "disastrous" and stated she would seek further details on the impact. She said: "The loss of 484 jobs and the closure of 38 bars is disastrous, both for the North East and the rest of the UK. My immediate thoughts go to the hardworking staff who have been impacted by this through no fault of their own."

Unite the union has also pledged to contact the company for answers on unpaid wages and transparency. Bryan Simpson, Unite's national lead for hospitality, criticised the management's handling, saying: "The way in which senior management have conducted themselves throughout this sales process has been nothing short of a national disgrace – with workers being given no information about the company's plans or their futures."
