Sportswear retailer JD Sports has unveiled a major technological shift, announcing plans to allow customers to buy products directly through artificial intelligence (AI) platforms.
The AI Shopping Partnership
The Greater Manchester-based group is collaborating with software firm Commercetools and payment specialist Stripe to build a system for seamless 'one-click purchases' within AI apps. This initiative is a direct response to the growing consumer trend of using AI assistants like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot for product discovery and research.
Jetan Chowk, JD's Chief Technology and Transformation Officer, explained the company's rationale. "We think AI is the future of how people will shop, and we want to stay at the forefront of how they shop," he told the Press Association. "What we are currently seeing is that customers are regularly using AI apps to research and discover the products they want to buy."
US First, Then Global Expansion
The new purchasing capability will first be introduced to customers in the United States in the coming months, starting with integration into Microsoft Copilot. The plan is to later extend the feature to other leading large language models (LLMs) and into other international markets, navigating each region's specific regulatory landscape for AI.
JD Sports has identified its core demographic of 18 to 24-year-olds as particularly engaged with AI technology, noting a significant surge in usage within this group. The system will enable a full shopping journey within the AI platform, from product location to integrated payment, without requiring the user to exit the app.
A Strategic Move for the Digital Landscape
Group Chief Executive Regis Schultz framed the move as a critical step in the company's digital evolution. "This strengthens our digital proposition for customers, and keeps us moving in line with the fast-changing retail landscape," he stated. "We see AI as a real opportunity to improve our customers' experience with JD, as well as making our own operations more efficient, and so I'm really pleased that with this big step forward we are putting our words into action."
By acting early, JD Sports aims to cement its position as a leader in retail innovation. "We can see that already and want to ensure we are moving early to meet customers and their needs in that space," added Mr Chowk, underscoring the proactive strategy behind the January 2026 announcement.
