Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Lidl & Morrisons Revamp Loyalty Schemes for Christmas
Supermarket loyalty card changes for December revealed

As the festive season reaches its peak, Britain's leading supermarkets are rolling out a sleigh-load of enhancements to their customer loyalty schemes. In a bid to reward festive shoppers, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, and Lidl have all announced significant updates to their programmes this December, offering everything from bonus cash to double points on gift cards.

Festive Boosts Across the Board

The changes are designed to put extra value back into shoppers' pockets during the expensive Christmas period. Each retailer has crafted a unique offer, ensuring that members of their respective loyalty schemes can earn and save more on their holiday spending.

Sainsbury's has extended its Nectar Card scheme to the Deliveroo platform. As reported by the Grocer, this move marks the first time the popular points programme has been available on a major delivery app. Customers who order from participating Sainsbury's stores via Deliveroo can now input their Nectar details at checkout, earning one point for every pound spent on eligible items.

Meanwhile, Tesco has introduced a special 'win-win' promotion for its Clubcard members. Throughout December, customers will earn double points on gift card purchases, receiving two points for every pound spent. These points can then be converted for greater value through Tesco's Clubcard Reward Partners, potentially offering up to 4 per cent back on spending. Ban Mahsoub, partnerships director at Tesco Insurance and Money Services, highlighted the seasonal benefit: "With two points for every £1 spent on gift cards, you can be confident you're giving something they'll love, and you'll get a little something back for yourself, too."

Surprise Treats and Savings Pots

Over at Asda, the Asda Rewards app is delivering unexpected Christmas cheer. The supermarket has quietly credited selected accounts with a festive £5 bonus within the Christmas Saver Cashpot section of the scheme. Furthermore, customers who topped up their card with at least £30 ahead of December could qualify for a bonus worth up to £15. The Cashpot allows shoppers to move 'Asda Pounds'—earned through shopping, in-app missions, or buying 'Star Products'—into a dedicated fund for Christmas, which can then be converted into vouchers.

Morrisons is incentivising consistent shopping with its 'Merry More Points' offer. More Card customers can earn £20 worth of points to redeem in-store or online by spending a minimum of £50 in four out of the five weeks leading up to Sunday, 14 December. The scheme is open to all members, whether they use the physical card or the Morrisons More App. To participate, digital users must activate the offer in the app.

Daily Rewards and Prize Draws

Not to be outdone, Lidl is launching a daily advent calendar-style reward for users of its Lidl Plus app. From Monday 1 December until Wednesday 24 December, customers can unlock a new festive treat each day by simply opening the app. These daily coupons, which range from free products to £5 vouchers, must be saved and activated ahead of a shop and are only valid for 24 hours. On selected days, the app will also offer entry into prize draws, with the grand prize being a year's worth of shopping.

This collective push by the UK's grocery giants underscores the heightened competition for customer loyalty during the crucial Christmas trading period. The varied approaches—from digital integrations to savings pots and daily surprises—provide consumers with multiple ways to make their holiday budget stretch further, turning routine grocery shopping into a more rewarding experience.
