Poundland is set to close two more stores in Birmingham within weeks after failing to secure new lease terms. The budget retailer will shut its outlets at the Grosvenor Centre in Northfield and on Warwick Road in Acocks Green, with closures scheduled for July 20 and August 6, respectively.
Reasons for Closure
A Poundland spokesperson confirmed the closures, stating: “I’m afraid the reason these stores are closing is simply we’ve been unable to secure new lease terms for both locations.” The company noted that with over 600 stores across the UK and Ireland, lease disagreements occasionally occur. The spokesperson added: “We know how disappointing this will be to our customers and colleagues at the store – work to consult with colleagues affected is under way.”
Impact on Staff and Customers
Poundland said it is working with staff at both locations. The Northfield store will close on July 20, followed by the Acocks Green store on August 6. The company expressed regret over the impact on customers and employees.
Future of Grosvenor Centre
The news comes a month after property firm M Core announced it had acquired the Grosvenor Centre, which spans 138,472 square feet and includes 43 units and two kiosks. The shopping centre is already undergoing changes, with Lidl obtaining planning permission to demolish the former Wilko store.
