A mother from Anglesey who lost her eldest son is raising money for the local charity that supported her family in their time of need. April Collin, from Amlwch, is braving the heights of the Marquess of Anglesey’s Column this May in a sponsored abseil for Hope House Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospices.
In 2012, April's son, Craig, tragically passed away after 10 days on life support following a motorcycle accident. The devastated family were put in touch with the Family Support services provided by Tŷ Gobaith in Conwy. There, specially trained staff helped their other young children navigate their grief.
Heights for Hope
April Collin will be joined by son Nico on the abseil. "I’ve never done anything like this before, and I’m excited for it. I just hope the weather is good for us," April shared. She will be joined on the day by her son, Nico, who has a better head for heights. As a tree surgeon, Nico is used to climbing, making the descent second nature for him. Nico and his sisters, Cheyenne and Kiara, received support from Tŷ Gobaith when Nico was just five-years-old. Now approaching the age Craig was when he died, Nico felt inspired to take on the challenge alongside his mother.
Hannah, a colleague of April’s at The Island Cove Café in Benllech - which April owns - has also committed to the challenge.
Climbing for Craig
Craig Collin died after a motorbike accident on Anglesey in 2012. The Marquess of Anglesey’s Column stands 89ft high, with 115 steps to reach the top. The Hope House Tŷ Gobaith Anglesey Abseil event takes place on Saturday, May 9. Entry costs £30, with a commitment to raise at least £150 in sponsorship. All participants will receive a bespoke t-shirt and a complimentary meal.
Nikki Sullivan, event organiser, said: "Come and join us for this breath-taking experience and help us to continue reaching every local child and family who are living with a life-threatening condition. We’re so excited to bring this successful event back to the wonderful island of Anglesey and the picturesque column. It’s going to be a day to remember and there’s just a few places left, so don’t delay in booking your spot."
The event is expertly hosted by North Wales’ own Go Vertical. Sponsor April here. Sign up for the event here. Location: Anglesey.
