Blues All Stars Charity Team Continues to Thrive in Birmingham
In an era where modern footballers often face criticism for a perceived disconnect from supporters, a heartwarming Birmingham City service is defying the odds. The Blues All Stars charity team, established in 1992, is not only surviving but thriving, thanks to the selfless efforts of former players who volunteer their time and skills for local causes.
Ex-Players Step Up for Community Fundraising
While many current players may have limited day-to-day interactions with fans, ex-players are stepping up to fill this gap. The Blues All Stars, founded by Kevan Broadhurst and radio personality Tom Ross, have seen a steady influx of former stars joining their ranks. Recent additions include Lukas Jutkiewicz, Curtis Davies, and Jonathan Grounds, who have teamed up with regulars like Craig Gardner, Roger Johnson, Darren Carter, Mat Sadler, Paul Devlin, Dele Adebola, Lee Carsley, Dennis Bailey, Maik Taylor, and Dave Busst.
Importantly, these players do not receive any payment or travel expenses; every penny raised goes directly to charities chosen by the game organizers. To date, the All Stars have helped raise over £1.8 million for various needy causes across the region.
Recent Success and Emotional Tributes
Last Sunday, the Blues All Stars were in action at Bromsgrove Sporting FC, playing a memorial game for Mark Crisp, a legendary player who passed away at an early age. Organized by his son Max, the event drew a packed crowd at the Victoria Ground and raised an impressive £16,464.19 for the Primrose Hospice & Family Support Centre. It was a highly competitive and emotional day, with former players rolling back the years to honor a fallen comrade.
Future Challenges and Upcoming Events
Despite their success, there are concerns about the future of the Blues All Stars. As the influx of ex-players may dwindle, the longevity of such charity teams is uncertain. However, the commitment remains strong. Next up is a special game on April 26 in memory of Robert "Hoppy" Hopkins, a founding member of the All Stars. Organized by Paul Ryder of RPG Events, the match will take place at The Willclare Sports and Social Club in Sheldon, with kick-off at 11am. All proceeds will benefit The Birmingham City Foundation and Help Harry Help Others children's cancer charity, continuing Hoppy's legacy of community support.
This initiative highlights how former athletes can give back to the community, fostering connections and making a tangible difference in Birmingham.
