Brummies Run to Fight Hunger in Great Birmingham Run

A passionate team of sporting stars are preparing to lace up their trainers and hit the road this weekend to raise money for an important charity. The Great Birmingham Run returns on Sunday, May 3, with thousands of Brummies racing around Birmingham for their chosen cause.

Abigail's Personal Challenge

Abigail Cattanach-Elsden, 31, from Birmingham, is one of those challenging herself by running the 10km race to fight hunger across the region. She is supporting FareShare Midlands, a charity dedicated to redistributing surplus food to those in need.

Speaking about the challenge, Abigail, a stakeholder and social value manager at VolkerFitzpatrick, said: "It's a personal challenge because I've normally only ever done a 5km, so I thought a 10km is a good next step up." She added: "But also, the opportunity to support FareShare, I think it's a bit of a no brainer."

About FareShare Midlands

FareShare Midlands describes itself as the region's largest food distribution charity, dedicated to making sure surplus food reaches those who need it most. According to its website, last year the charity redistributed over 5,000 tonnes of food—equivalent to 11 million meals—helping 60,000 people every week. It also offers SkillsShare training and work experience programmes, empowering individuals with essential skills and confidence. To date, it has supported over 1,250 people on their journey toward employment.

Multi-Layered Support

Discussing the charity's vital role, Abigail said: "With FareShare, it's a multi layered approach to what support they're offering. Obviously it's reducing the surplus of food, which is like the sustainability side, that's so important, but then it's with the hub they've got." She continued: "They've got the ability there to support people, their skills, employability, and I think that's so important, especially in the Midlands. We haven't got the best rates for unemployment and child poverty. So any charities that are looking to address multiple issues is really important that we support."

Team Effort

Nearly 30 runners, including supporters, partners, and local businesses, will take on the 10K and Half Marathon to raise funds for FareShare this weekend. Every mile completed helps provide meals for those facing food insecurity. Simone Connolly, CEO of FareShare Midlands, said: "We're incredibly grateful to everyone taking part. Taking on a 10K or Half Marathon is no small feat, but the impact will be felt far beyond race day. Every pound raised helps us get more food to people who need it most in our communities."

A major force behind this year's team is VolkerFitzpatrick, whose support has helped dozens of runners take part. Their team recently volunteered with FareShare Midlands, seeing first hand the scale of need and the difference surplus food can make.
