Cat Rescues Unite for Sponsored Walk on Aberavon Beach

Three local cat rescue organisations are joining forces for a sponsored 'Cat Walk' along Aberavon Beach. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of neutering and the growing pressure on small, independent animal charities across South Wales.

Swansea Cats and Kittens, Ty Nant Cat Sanctuary, and Forgotten Felines have teamed up to organise the five-mile walk on Sunday, April 26, inviting supporters, families, and animal lovers to take part. Registration opens at noon outside Remo's, with the walk beginning at 1pm. Participants can pre-register online.

Why Five Miles?

The event's distance was chosen with a specific purpose in mind: unneutered male cats - known as tomcats - can roam up to five miles or more in search of a female in heat. Rescuers note that this behaviour contributes significantly to the number of unplanned litters born each year, many of which eventually require rescue spaces that are already stretched to capacity.

Growing Demand on Rescues

Local rescues report they are facing increasing demand, with more kittens being surrendered and fewer homes available. Neutering, they say, remains one of the most effective ways to prevent suffering and reduce the number of cats needing help.

A spokesperson for Swansea Cats and Kittens said: "Every year we see the impact of unneutered cats - unwanted kittens, abandoned litters and overwhelmed owners. By walking five miles, we're highlighting just how far a tomcat will travel, and why neutering is so essential for preventing avoidable suffering."

Community Event

The organisers hope the event will bring the community together while spreading a vital welfare message. Walkers are encouraged to bring friends, family, and even their well-behaved dogs for a relaxed afternoon by the sea.
