Walk Across Morecambe Bay to Support MS Charity

The MS Therapy Centre (NW), a North West based charity, is offering readers the chance to take part in an iconic walk across Morecambe Bay. Led by award-winning Michael Wilson, King's Guide to the Kent estuary, the eight-mile walk takes around four hours to complete and promises stunning views and lasting memories.

Event Details and Route

The walk takes place on Sunday, August 9, starting at Arnside Promenade in Cumbria, with registration between 11.30am and 1pm. The route follows the stony edge of the beach, around the headland, and then out onto the sands, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, Lancashire, and Yorkshire, ending at Grange-over-Sands.

Expert Guide Michael Wilson

Michael Wilson, a local fisherman from Flookburgh with generations of ancestors who fished the same waters, understands the movements of the channels in Morecambe Bay. He meticulously plans each walk, reading the route using markers placed before the big day. His advice on footwear: "Either barefoot or old trainers which you don’t mind getting soaked."

Charity's Mission and Impact

Since 2004, the MS Therapy Centre NW has supported people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to lead more positive, enriched lives through complimentary therapies, oxygen treatment, support, and wellbeing services. It also extends its reach to those with other neurological conditions, cancers, long COVID, and other specific conditions. The centre is a hub of life, humour, support, and friendship.

Fundraising for Renovations

Ann Hedley, a Trustee organising the walk, said: "This will be the 13th time that I have taken part in this walk and it’s different each time. I can’t wait to do it again!" She added: "Currently the charity is raising funds to complete the renovation of our new centre. Having bought the premises, and raised sufficient funds to complete the works, just before covid began, like many other charities we suffered in that difficult climate and the ensuing challenges. Costs to provide the facilities needed have doubled since the original quotes. Monies raised from last year’s event helped to complete the Physiotherapy Suite which provides a gym and two consulting rooms. It’s all fully accessible and has allowed us to provide group and 1-2-1 physiotherapy, Tai Chi and other group classes, electro-magnetic and air energy therapy. With fully accessible toilets and a fire-safe lift system these additional facilities have made an amazing difference to all those we support. Just imagine how much we can support those living with MS, their families, carers and friends with more space. However, we’re still working hard to renovate the rest of the building so we continue to rely on wonderful people who come forward to support us. We hope that lots of them will join us on this iconic walk."
