Community Spirit Crisis: Funding Gap Threatens Local Projects

UK Community Spirit in Crisis as Funding Gap Threatens Local Projects

Britain's cherished community spirit is facing significant pressure, with alarming new research revealing a widespread decline in local cohesion. A comprehensive survey of 2,000 Britons conducted by Selco Builders Warehouse indicates that nearly half (48%) have witnessed the disappearance of community spaces and charities in their areas. Furthermore, a third (33%) describe their community as 'struggling', painting a concerning picture of social fragmentation across the nation.

A Nation Perceiving Decline

The study underscores a palpable sense of deterioration, with 31% of respondents believing their community has worsened over the past five years. This perception highlights growing challenges in maintaining the social fabric that binds neighbourhoods together. Despite this bleak outlook, the research also uncovers a powerful collective desire for positive change and revitalisation.

Overwhelming Support for Community Action

An overwhelming 85% of Brits affirm that community projects make a tangible, positive difference in people's lives. This strong belief is coupled with a clear demand for investment, as 83% state that increased funding for local initiatives would make them feel more hopeful about the future of their area. However, grassroots efforts are consistently hampered by financial constraints.

The data reveals that 79% of people attribute the struggles of local projects to a chronic lack of funding, while 75% believe the dedicated individuals behind these initiatives do not receive the recognition they truly deserve. This funding gap threatens the very projects that are essential for community resilience and wellbeing.

Selco Launches £62,000 Community Heroes Campaign

In direct response to this critical funding shortage, Selco Builders Warehouse has partnered with renowned TV tradesperson Rob Bent to launch its ambitious Community Heroes campaign. This initiative establishes a substantial £62,000 funding pot specifically designed to support the local charities, clubs, and groups that are instrumental in holding communities together.

The campaign seeks to celebrate the unsung heroes at the heart of neighbourhoods across the UK, providing them with the essential tools, materials, and financial resources needed to expand their impact and drive local improvement. Since its inception in 2021, the Community Heroes programme has already delivered thousands of pounds to worthy causes, with £57,500 distributed to local projects in 2025 alone.

Rob Bent Champions Grassroots Change

Supporting the campaign, Rob Bent emphasised the vital role of community projects. "Community projects are the heartbeat of local areas," he stated. "They bring us together and make a real difference but too often run on passion alone. Grassroots initiatives often lack the support they deserve, so I’m excited to be partnering with Selco to recognise those going above and beyond. I’m proud to support the Community Heroes campaign and can’t wait to see the impact it has across the country."

How the Community Heroes Fund Works

The Community Heroes fund is open to any community group, club, or charity that could benefit from building supplies or funding to enhance their local area. The selection process is robust and offers significant rewards:

  • Each month, one winner, chosen by Rob Bent and a Selco panel, will receive £2,000 worth of building supplies to spend at their local Selco branch, along with a place in the annual final vote.
  • Two monthly runners-up will each receive £1,000 worth of building supplies.
  • At the end of the year, all monthly winners will progress to a public vote. The ultimate first-place winner will be awarded a grand prize of £15,000. Second and third place will receive £10,000 and £5,000 respectively.

Building Stronger Foundations for the Future

The campaign aims to directly address the hope deficit identified in the research, where 83% linked increased funding to greater optimism about their area's future. The research also highlighted the crucial role of local tradespeople, with 76% believing they play an important part in laying the foundations for stronger communities.

By providing essential funding and access to building materials, Selco intends to have a substantive impact on the development of small-scale community projects that are actively building brighter futures for their localities. Applications for the Community Heroes fund are now open. Community groups are strongly encouraged to apply directly or nominate a local cause deserving of support. The entry deadline is November 30, with the overall winner being crowned in January 2027.
