Community Spirit in Crisis: Funding Shortfall Threatens Local Projects

Community Spirit Under Strain as Funding Gaps Widen

Britain's community spirit is facing significant pressure, with new research indicating a troubling decline in local cohesion. A survey by Selco Builders Warehouse, involving 2,000 Brits, found that nearly half (48 per cent) observe community spaces and charities disappearing from their areas. Furthermore, one-third (33 per cent) describe their communities as "struggling," and 31 per cent believe their local environment has worsened over the past five years.

Overwhelming Support for Community Initiatives

Despite these challenges, there is a strong desire for positive change. An overwhelming 85 per cent of respondents affirm that community projects make a real difference in people's lives. Additionally, 83 per cent express that increased funding would foster greater hope for the future of their localities. However, grassroots efforts are often hindered by financial constraints, with 79 per cent citing a lack of funding as a major obstacle and 75 per cent feeling that volunteers and organisers do not receive adequate recognition.

Selco Launches Community Heroes Campaign

To address these funding shortages, Selco Builders Warehouse has partnered with TV tradesperson Rob Bent to introduce the Community Heroes campaign. This initiative features a £62,000 funding pool aimed at supporting local charities, clubs, and groups that are essential for community cohesion. Since its inception in 2021, the campaign has already distributed thousands of pounds, including £57,500 to various projects in 2025.

Rob Bent, supporting the campaign, emphasised: "Community projects are the heartbeat of local areas. They bring us together and make a real difference, but too often run on passion alone. Grassroots initiatives often lack the support they deserve, so I'm excited to be partnering with Selco to recognise those going above and beyond."

How the Funding Programme Works

The Community Heroes fund is open to any community group, club, or charity that could benefit from building supplies or financial support to enhance their local area. Each month, one winner, chosen by Rob Bent and a Selco panel, will receive £2,000 worth of building materials from their local Selco store, along with a spot in the final vote. Two runners-up will each receive £1,000 in supplies.

At the year's end, monthly winners will advance to a public vote, where the top prize is £15,000, with second and third place awards of £10,000 and £5,000, respectively. This structure aims to empower communities and recognise the vital role of local tradespeople, with 76 per cent of survey respondents acknowledging their importance in building stronger neighbourhoods.

Application Details and Future Impact

Applications for the Community Heroes campaign are currently open, encouraging groups to nominate themselves or deserving local causes. The deadline for entries is November 30, with the overall winner announced in January 2027. Through this initiative, Selco hopes to bolster small community projects, fostering brighter futures and reinforcing the foundation of UK communities.
