Clinical Physiologist's Fire Walk Triumph Funds Special Gaming Cart for Hospital Patients
In a remarkable display of courage and community spirit, Clinical Physiologist Katie Harris braved the Hywel Dda Fire Walk challenge last October, raising a significant sum for her department at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen.
Katie's efforts culminated in a total of £1,545 raised, dedicated to enhancing patient care in the neurophysiology unit. Reflecting on the experience, she expressed immense satisfaction, stating, "It was an amazing, empowering experience which I am truly grateful to have been a part of."
Gaming Cart to Alleviate Patient Discomfort During Tests
The funds are earmarked for a specific and innovative purpose: purchasing a Rockin R Gaming Cart for the Neurophysiology department at Glangwili General Hospital. This cart will be equipped with an Xbox and streaming services such as Netflix and YouTube, designed to provide entertainment and distraction for patients undergoing lengthy procedures.
Katie highlighted the profound impact this will have, particularly for younger patients, explaining, "This will greatly benefit so many of our patients, particularly children, who have to sit for long periods of time whilst having their EEG tests done." By offering engaging activities, the gaming cart aims to reduce anxiety and improve the overall hospital experience for vulnerable individuals.
Charity Support Amplifies NHS Services
Claire Rumble, Fundraising Officer at Hywel Dda Health Charities, the official charity of Hywel Dda University Health Board, extended heartfelt thanks to Katie for her extraordinary contribution. "Thank you so much to Katie for raising such an incredible amount for Hywel Dda Health Charities," she said.
Emphasising the role of charitable donations, Claire added, "We are very grateful for every donation we receive, no matter how small or large. The charitable donations we receive don't replace NHS funding. They are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure." This underscores how community fundraising efforts complement essential healthcare services, enabling enhancements that directly benefit patients and staff.
Katie's initiative not only showcases personal dedication but also illustrates the powerful synergy between individual action and charitable support in bolstering local healthcare provisions.
