Four friends from Carmarthenshire have gone above and beyond, raising nearly £3,000 for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital by participating in a five-day European rally. John, Terry, Mario, and Tim, collectively known as The Ghostbusters, took on the Screwball Rally from September 18 to 22, 2025, covering more than 2,000 miles across mainland Europe in a Ghostbusters-themed car.
The Rally Challenge
The team joined 50 other vehicles and teams traveling from Kent to Dover before crossing into Europe. The rally route then passed through Germany and Austria, with the final destination being Prague. After reaching Prague, the group began the long journey home via Calais. The friends, who all met through their children's involvement in Scouting in Carmarthen, unanimously chose to fundraise for the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Glangwili Hospital, a service close to their families' hearts.
Fundraising Success
Their fundraising efforts raised an impressive £2,889, well exceeding their original target. All donations will support patients receiving cancer treatment at the hospital, helping to enhance care and improve the experience for those attending the unit. Speaking about the challenge, the group said: "The fundraiser was an experience for all of us: challenging, enjoyable and incredibly rewarding. The support we received from our families, friends and donors throughout the rally was amazing." The team added that they are already planning to take part in another fundraising challenge in the future.
Charity's Gratitude
Tara Nickerson, Fundraising Manager at Hywel Dda Health Charities, said: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to John, Terry, Mario and Tim, along with everyone who supported and donated to their incredible fundraising effort. The generous charitable donations we receive do not replace NHS funding. Instead, they support additional items and activities outside core NHS expenditure. These small extras make a big difference, and we are so grateful for every donation we receive."
