Gloucestershire Executive Prepares for London Marathon in Support of SSAFA

Jim Hamilton, a self-confessed adrenaline junkie and part-time rock guitarist from Gloucestershire, is gearing up to run the London Marathon for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. At 48 years old, Jim serves as the Operations Director of CDS Defence and Security, based in Cheltenham, and has been diligently training for the event scheduled on April 27.

Training Paused for a Special Celebration

However, his training regimen has been temporarily put on hold for a heartwarming reason: a two-week holiday in Jamaica to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his marriage to his wife, I-Lan. Jim resides in the Golden Valley area between Stroud and Cirencester, and while he has not served in the military himself, his family has a rich history of service.

Both his father and grandfather, affectionately known as "Pap," served in the Scots Guards. Jim shared poignant details about his grandfather's experiences during World War II. "Pap took part in the Normandy Landings in June 1944. He was badly wounded but survived, though the rest of his battalion died," he recounted.

He added, "When Pap was injured, he was in constant correspondence with his wife, my granny, and I have copies of all his handwritten letters. They are utterly tear-jerking."

A History of Fundraising and Community Spirit

Jim and CDS Defence and Security are no strangers to fundraising efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jim completed a 50-mile run to raise funds, and the company has officially chosen SSAFA as its designated charity. The organization hosts various seasonal fundraising events, including competitions for designing the best Easter eggs and carving the best pumpkins for Halloween, along with a Christmas fun run, cake sales, and other enjoyable activities.

Multifaceted Interests and Personal Drive

Jim is a man of diverse talents and passions. He expressed, "I love sport, and running is the only time I get head space. I play guitar – heavy rock, blues, and rock – and recently started having guitar lessons after stopping in my teens." He also enjoys being playful and embarrassing his children, who are now 19 and 21 years old.

Describing himself as a bit of an adrenaline junkie, Jim has engaged in activities like bungee jumping and cliff diving. He humorously noted, "That's probably a big reason I had to have neck surgery a few years ago, but that won't stop me from continuing to be stupid, though."

Corporate Commitment to the Armed Forces

Jim highlighted that CDS Defence and Security employs approximately 200 people, with about 60-70 percent of its workforce consisting of veterans or reservists. He stated, "CDS DS has a long-standing tradition and commitment to supporting the Armed Forces alongside SSAFA, and we proudly hold the Armed Forces Covenant, Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award."

Looking Forward to Marathon Day

As he anticipates the event, Jim said, "I'm really looking forward to the day, which will be my first time doing the London Marathon. Everyone tells me that it's an amazing day with an incredible atmosphere, but more than that, I'm honoured to have the opportunity to raise money for SSAFA and do my little bit for those who serve, have served, and will serve – and for their families."

Jim has set a fundraising target of £2,500 for SSAFA. His dedication to this cause reflects both personal and corporate values, aiming to make a meaningful impact through his marathon efforts.
