Sid's journey into fundraising began a decade ago when he underwent a life-changing operation to remove his eye due to skin cancer. This motivated him to pledge that, upon recovery, he would raise money for charities, particularly those aiding children with cancer. Despite challenges, including the cancer spreading to his eye socket, Sid remains positive, stating, "I've been struggling the last couple of years but other than that I'm still alive to tell the tale."

At nearly 74 years old, Sid has decided that this will be his last charity event, citing the physical demands of organisation. He explains, "This is the last one, we've got to the stage, we're getting a bit too old now because this is just not about selling tickets." His wife, Elaine Histon, echoes this sentiment, noting that as a couple in their seventies, the setup takes roughly four days and becomes increasingly difficult each time.
