A cherished family hairdressing business with salons in Canterbury and Faversham has achieved a remarkable fundraising milestone, generating more than £100,000 for Pilgrims Hospices through decades of dedicated support and festive initiatives. This incredible total has been built up over many years, showcasing the power of community spirit and loyal customer engagement in supporting vital local healthcare services.
Festive Fundraising Success
Each year, Steven James Hairdressing organises a popular Christmas raffle to benefit the hospice charity. The event has become a much-anticipated highlight of the festive season for both customers and staff, offering an exciting array of prizes that attract widespread participation. The most recent raffle in 2025 proved to be exceptionally successful, raising an impressive £5,735. This contribution has pushed the business's cumulative fundraising total to an astounding £102,521, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the cause.
Raffle prizes have included a diverse range of attractive items, such as restaurant meals, the use of a brand new car for a weekend, and even the donation of an iPad from a generous customer. Many other gifts have been kindly provided by local supporters, enhancing the appeal of the raffle and encouraging ticket sales. Tickets are sold across the business's locations, including the barbershop run by Jason in Canterbury, the salon managed by Steven, and the Faversham salon operated by James.
A Family Legacy of Care
The association between Steven James Hairdressing and Pilgrims Hospices began over four decades ago, inspired by personal experience. Steven Flower, who runs the salon on Castle Street in Canterbury, explained the origins of their support. "Our connection with Pilgrims started more than 40 years ago when a family friend was admitted," he said. "The love and care he received was outstanding, as was the support shown to his family." This heartfelt experience motivated the business to embark on a long-term fundraising journey.
The hairdressing dynasty itself has a rich history within the Canterbury and Faversham business community, dating back to 1908 when Henry Flower opened a barbershop on Palace Street in Canterbury. His wife later became established as one of the first female barbers in the country, paving the way for future generations. Their sons, Ernest and Bertram, continued the family tradition by opening their own shops in Canterbury.
Since then, five generations of hairdressers have led the business. Jim followed in his father's footsteps in 1962 and opened his own shop in 1985, naming it Steven James after his two sons, who now manage the Canterbury and Faversham salons. This enduring family legacy has been intertwined with community support, making their fundraising efforts all the more meaningful.
Heartfelt Appreciation from the Hospice
Leila Ilkhan, from Pilgrims Hospices, expressed deep gratitude for the ongoing support from Steven James Hairdressing. "We are so proud to have the support of Steven James Hairdressing, who have been part of the hospice story for almost as long as we have opened our doors," she said. "Thank you to Steven, James, Jim, Jason and all their wonderful customers, who each year raise this incredible sum of money for local hospice care." This partnership highlights how local businesses can make a significant impact on healthcare services through sustained charitable efforts.
