Hundreds of Pensioners Charged with Serious Crimes in West Midlands

A BirminghamLive investigation has revealed that hundreds of pensioners in the West Midlands have been charged with serious crimes over the past five years, including murder, rape, and violent attacks. These individuals, often referred to as old-aged criminals (OACs), defy the typical image of retirement-age citizens enjoying a quiet life.

Shocking Statistics

Data shows that three older individuals, aged 65 and two aged 67, were charged with murder. Additionally, a 75-year-old was charged with rape, along with others aged 67, 69, and 72. Fifty-eight pensioners were detained for other sexual offences, some of which may be historic.

One notable case is Anthony Doyle, 67, from Stirchley, who was jailed for sexually abusing and secretly recording young girls. His wife had previously won a £3 million house in an Omaze lottery.

Other Crimes

The oldest person charged was a 94-year-old accused of causing death or serious injury by dangerous driving. Two others, aged 90 and 87, faced similar charges. Two 65-year-olds were charged with robbery.

Violence against the person was the most common offence, with 101 incidents causing injury since 2021. Twenty pensioners were charged with drug trafficking, and dozens more with possessing offensive weapons.

High-Profile Cases

In 2022, Hugh Wedderburn, 67, was convicted of attempting to murder his estranged wife by stabbing her repeatedly in broad daylight in Walsall. In 2021, Liaqat Ali, 70, was jailed for 18 months after threatening to shoot his neighbour with a BB gun during a drunken rage in Birmingham city centre.

These cases demonstrate that not all pensioners fit the stereotype of a harmless grandparent; some are capable of serious and dangerous crimes.
