Joel Hardaker's Gruelling Triathlon to Honour Late Father and Support Dementia Ward

Joel Hardaker is embarking on a demanding three-day challenge to raise vital funds for Ward 12 at Withybush Hospital, a heartfelt tribute to his late father who battled dementia. From June 26 to 28, 2026, Joel will participate in the renowned Long Course Weekend in Tenby, aiming to complete a 2.4-mile sea swim, a 112-mile cycle, and the Wales Marathon.

A Personal Mission Inspired by Family Legacy

Joel's father, whose strength and patience profoundly shaped his life, passed away after a long fight with dementia. Joel explained, "People might remember my past achievements, but they don't see the quiet battles behind closed doors. The grief, the pressure, the nights spent missing a loved one who should still be here, my dad." He described his father as a calming presence who always stood by him, even helping him overcome a childhood fear of the sea through patient encouragement.

The Impact of Dementia on Families

The Hardaker family has faced significant loss, including Joel's mother earlier in life and watching their father's decline due to dementia. Joel shared, "Dementia slowly started to take pieces of him away. Watching someone so strong slowly fade is something no family is ever prepared for. Dementia doesn't just affect one person, it affects everyone who loves them." This experience has motivated Joel and his brothers—Luke, Charles, and Ollie—to support others facing similar challenges.

Community Support and Fundraising Goals

Joel's fundraiser aims to assist dementia research and care for families. He urged, "If you can donate, share, or support in any way, it would truly mean the world. Every contribution helps support dementia research and care for families facing the same heart-breaking disease." Tara Nickerson, fundraising manager for Hywel Dda Health Charities, praised Joel's efforts, stating, "We're inspired by Joel's story and his determination to give something back to dementia services. Good luck Joel, we look forward to cheering you on!"

How Donations Make a Difference

Nickerson highlighted that charitable donations do not replace NHS funding but provide additional support for items and activities beyond core expenses. "These small extras make a big difference, and we are so grateful for every donation we receive," she added. The event is based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, drawing local and regional attention to dementia care needs.
