Lidl Donates £19,000 to Midlands Charities via Local Stores

Lidl Invests £19,000 in Midlands Charities Through Local Store Initiatives

Lidl GB has reinforced its dedication to community welfare by donating a further £19,000 to local charities across the Midlands. This contribution is part of the retailer's ongoing community investment programme, which focuses on enhancing support for vital services ranging from family assistance to youth outreach and community wellbeing projects.

Empowering Store Colleagues to Drive Local Impact

In a move that prioritises grassroots involvement, colleagues from 19 participating Lidl stores in the Midlands have personally selected 38 charities to receive one-off £500 donations. This initiative ensures that funds are directed toward causes that resonate deeply with local communities, fostering meaningful change at a neighbourhood level.

Spotlight on Selected Charities and Their Missions

One of the beneficiaries is Gingerbread Family Support, nominated by colleagues at the Burslem store in Stoke-on-Trent. This charity provides critical aid to families with children in crisis, offering supported accommodation, emotional support, and practical assistance to those grappling with financial hardships, isolation, or housing challenges.

Store manager Katie Standish expressed pride in the team's choice, noting that selecting a charity so closely tied to the local community was particularly special. The donation aims to alleviate pressures on vulnerable families and create positive experiences for children.

Becky Painter, community fundraiser at Gingerbread Family Support, shared her gratitude: "We were absolutely delighted and very grateful to hear that a colleague from Lidl had nominated us. Knowing that the local community recognises our work and wants to support families in crisis means a great deal. This generous donation will help us continue providing vital support to those who need it most."

Additional Charities Benefiting from the Programme

In Derby, shift manager Scott Allison at the Alvaston store chose the St John Fisher Parents and Friends Association, highlighting the school's valued role in the community. As a smaller institution, it relies on fundraising for enhanced experiences, wellbeing initiatives, and extra resources for pupils. The donation is expected to fund practical improvements, such as new storage for toys and equipment or outdoor play items.

Other charities receiving support include:

  • Derby Kids Camp, which provides free holidays to local children, selected by the Alvaston store.
  • Brierley Hill Babybank, dedicated to preventing and relieving poverty in the area, chosen by the Merry Hill store.

Expanding Support Through Feed it Back and Foodies Programmes

Beyond direct donations, Lidl has extended its impact through the 'Feed it Back' programme, run in partnership with the community platform Neighbourly. Charity partners connected to participating stores have received £300 Lidl gift cards as part of this surplus food redistribution initiative. Since 2016, the programme has redistributed the equivalent of over 7.3 million meals in the Midlands and more than 50 million meals nationally, addressing food insecurity effectively.

Additionally, the Lidl Foodies Programme, which inspires healthy eating among children, has seen a £675,000 investment since 2024. Through teacher-led resources provided via the National Schools Partnership, it has already reached more than 100,000 children in the Midlands.

Leadership Perspectives on Community Commitment

Ryan McDonnell, CEO at Lidl GB, commented on the initiative: "We've made strong progress in our community investment, supporting millions of people in need through our food donations every year. We are always striving to go further, which is the inspiration behind this latest initiative. This empowers our colleagues to support locally, creating meaningful change alongside our charity partners in the communities they serve."

Known as ‘The Lidl Effect’, the benefits of the retailer's operations, investments, and employment extend beyond mere transactions. This community commitment will now be embedded from day one with every new store opening, ensuring sustained support for local causes across the Midlands.
