Lincoln Cathedral Sleep Out Raises Funds for Homelessness Charity
Local residents are set to brave the cold by spending the night sleeping on the Dean’s Green at Lincoln Cathedral next week. Those taking on the challenge on Friday, March 6, are raising vital funds and awareness for people at risk of homelessness in Lincolnshire. Now in its 15th year, the annual Sleep Easy event has previously raised more than £100,000 for YMCA Lincolnshire’s emergency accommodation, the Nomad Centre.
Urgent Need for Support
With concerning statistics around homelessness in the UK increasing every year, it is now more critical than ever for the charity to raise the essential funds needed to run the Nomad Centre. Helen Wright, director of housing at YMCA Lincolnshire, emphasized the human impact behind the numbers.
"In the UK in 2024, 1,611 individuals experiencing homelessness died, 11 of which were children," she said. "These are not faceless statistics; they are lives cut short. We want to save the lives of those at risk of homelessness and support them every step of the way on a journey to independence and a brighter future."
She added that the emergency accommodation not only provides a bed and a warm space but also offers 24/7 wrap-round support to ensure every individual has the resources they need for their journey.
Community Engagement Expands
Lincoln Cathedral won’t be the only place in the city where people will be sleeping outside. Ruddocks, a local creative production agency, is hosting its own version of the event. Paul Banton, managing director of Ruddocks, explained their motivation.
"While the main Sleep Easy event takes place at the Cathedral, we felt strongly about creating a satellite event at Ruddocks to broaden awareness and engagement within our community," he commented. "On March 6, we’ll be swapping our warm beds for a cold night under the stars (and quite possibly some Lincoln drizzle) as a team."
He noted that fundraising for YMCA Lincolnshire reflects their ongoing commitment to supporting those facing poverty locally, and by sleeping outside, they stand alongside people without a safe home. "If it encourages even a few more people to give what they can, then it will have been well worth a chilly night," he added.
Historical Collaboration
Lincolnshire has a vast and rich history, with YMCA Lincolnshire and Ruddocks both having been part of it for more than 100 years. This collaboration highlights the enduring community spirit in the region.
There is still time to get involved with the sleep out, and YMCA Lincolnshire encourages anyone interested to sign up for the event. For more information and to participate, individuals can visit the charity’s dedicated webpage.
