Inkersall Man Prepares for Sparkle Night Walk in Memory of Wife

Peter Jacques, a resident of Inkersall, is once again gearing up to participate in the 10k Sparkle Night Walk for Ashgate Hospice. This heartfelt effort is in memory of his beloved wife Sue, who received compassionate care at home from the hospice team before her passing.

A Journey of Remembrance and Support

Peter will join hundreds of supporters at Chesterfield's cherished annual night-time fundraiser on Saturday, June 27. This marks his second participation in the event, which plays a crucial role in raising vital funds for hospice care across North Derbyshire, the High Peak, and Dales.

Sue became unwell in autumn 2024 and was later diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Tragically, she died that same year, but not before being supported at home by Ashgate's specialist palliative care nurses. Peter emphasizes that the care and reassurance provided meant Sue could remain where she wished—at home, surrounded by loved ones.

"The care we had from Ashgate Hospice meant that Sue’s wish of being at home could happen," said Peter. "The support was invaluable. We never felt alone and knew they were always only a phone call away. At every visit, Sue was treated with care and compassion, and nothing was ever too much trouble."

A Legacy of Giving Back

Throughout their life together, Peter and Sue fostered an impressive 68 children, opening their home to babies and young people for both short breaks and longer stays. Peter views participating in the walk as a natural continuation of the life they shared, a way to give back to the community that supported them.

Peter first took part in the Sparkle Night Walk last year in Sue's memory, accompanied by family members, colleagues, and friends from Inkersall Spencer Academy, where Sue worked for over three decades. Dressed in sparkly outfits and pink tutus, the group raised an incredible £5,398.

"Sue would have been so proud of us all," Peter reflected. "She’d have been looking down and laughing at us wearing our pink tutus! Doing the walk is something I’ll never forget. It’s emotional, but it’s also really special. I’d encourage anyone thinking about signing up to do it. It’s a great way to remember someone important to you, for a fantastic cause."

Event Details and Community Impact

Up to 3,500 walkers are expected to gather at Chesterfield Football Club for the 10km walk. Participants can join with friends, family, or colleagues, and many choose to walk in memory of someone significant to them. Each registrant will receive a fundraising pack, a pink Sparkle T-shirt, and flashing bunny ears to wear on the night.

Early bird entry is available for just £15 until March 29. As an independent charity, Ashgate Hospice receives less than a third of its funding from the NHS, relying heavily on community generosity. By taking part, supporters help ensure the hospice can continue providing essential care when it matters most.

"I used to think hospice care only happened in the hospice building," Peter added. "I’d tell anyone not to worry about the hospice coming into your home. The care we had meant Sue could be where she wanted to be, surrounded by us. I’ll always be grateful for that."

To sign up for the Sparkle Night Walk and secure an early bird place, individuals can visit the Ashgate Hospice website. This event not only honors memories but also strengthens the vital services that support families in need across the region.
