A 27-year-old man from Oundle has accomplished a monumental feat, walking the entire length of Britain in a heartfelt tribute that raised thousands for a vital hospice charity.
A Journey of Remembrance
Finley Goodhew spent three months traversing the 1,300-mile route from John O'Groats to Land's End, accompanied for much of the way by his loyal border collie, Reggie. The extraordinary challenge was undertaken in memory of close family friend Elliot Roseblade, who received care at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice during the final weeks of his life.
Averaging approximately 15 miles each day, Finley's epic trek took him through some of the UK's most breathtaking landscapes. His route showcased the nation's diverse beauty, from the rugged peaks of Ben Nevis to the dramatic coastal paths of the South West.
Challenges and Unexpected Blessings
The journey presented its share of difficulties, including a mid-trek setback when Reggie injured his paw and required a break from walking. Despite continuing temporarily without his canine companion, Finley remained positive, frequently uplifted by the kindness of strangers he encountered along the way.
Several memorable moments stood out, including a family reunion in Tyndrum after nearly 250 miles on foot. His father joined him for four days on what turned out to be one of the toughest stretches of the entire route—the West Highland Way.
Perhaps the most unexpected development occurred on Day 19, when Finley met fellow walker Lauren. What began as a chance encounter blossomed into something more significant, with Lauren joining him for part of the journey. The pair now live together in Edinburgh and are planning their next adventure.
A Lasting Legacy
Throughout his three-month odyssey, Finley never lost sight of his inspiration. He regularly documented his progress on Instagram, sharing daily updates and reflections with his growing audience.
The walk successfully raised £3,645 for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, the facility that cared for Elliot. Reflecting on his achievement, Finley expressed both amazement and gratitude for the experience.
"What an experience that was! I still can't believe I've walked the whole of the UK," Finley shared. "When I do have time to sit down and relax, I often get flashbacks of my trip and have many fond memories."
He firmly believes Elliot was with him in spirit throughout the journey, particularly during moments of uncertainty about accommodation. "I really believe he would've been very grateful and slightly mind-blown that I'd done this in his memory," Finley added.
The incredible journey has left an indelible mark on Finley, who describes it as "definitely a memory that'll live forever with me."
