When Reverend Canon Josh Askwith was first appointed as Sub-Dean of the Diocese of St Asaph in 2025, he was struck by the grandeur of the magnificent cathedral that would become his place of worship and work. Little did he imagine that just one year later, he would volunteer to launch a Rotary Club's charity fundraising effort by abseiling from the highest point of the cathedral's imposing tower, some 84 feet above ground level.
A Daring Challenge for a Worthy Cause
Josh commented: "When Rhyl Rotary Club contacted me to help launch the abseil project, I was delighted to accept. I have always enjoyed outdoor activities such as rock-climbing, but nothing as exciting or challenging as this. It is a privilege to be involved in an activity which will hopefully raise many thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes."
Rotarian Tracey Phillips, joint co-ordinator of the project, who will also be abseiling on the day, added: "We are really pleased that Josh has agreed to help us launch the project, and we cannot wait until Saturday, April 25, when many individuals and groups will accept the abseiling challenge to raise funds for their chosen charity or good cause. This is the main event of our centenary year celebrations, and we are sure the day will attract many visitors and well-wishers to St Asaph."
Rhyl Rotary Club's Centenary
The Rotary Club of Rhyl was chartered in May 1926 and has grown from strength to strength over the last one hundred years, earning a reputation for serving its local community and providing aid nationally and internationally in times of need.
Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Nigel Williams, commented: "When approached, we were delighted to co-operate with the Rotary Club in this ambitious venture. We wish Josh well in launching the abseil and look forward to welcoming all brave participants and their families on the day."
Josh's wife, Ashleigh, and daughter, Abbie, will be present to cheer him on. Many visitors are expected to accompany the intrepid groups and individuals who have registered to take part.
