Rossendale Rotary Club Learns About Rare Disorder and Charity Efforts
At a recent gathering, the Rossendale Rotary Club was deeply moved by a heartfelt presentation from Rebecca Selby, a new member of the organization. Rebecca shared the story of her younger daughter, Shea, who was diagnosed nearly four years ago with a very rare neurological condition known as GAND.
Due to the extreme rarity of this disorder, the family initially faced significant challenges in finding reliable information and support. They felt lost and uncertain about what to expect for Shea's future. After extensive searching, they connected with a doctor in the United States who could provide some much-needed insights and guidance.
Establishing GAND AID UK to Support Families
In response to their struggles, Rebecca and her family decided to take action by founding the charity GAND AID UK. Although the charity operates across the entire United Kingdom, it is proudly based right here in Rossendale. Its primary mission is to assist other families who are grappling with similar difficulties related to GAND, offering them a lifeline of support and resources.
This June, GAND AID UK will host its second annual gathering and conference at the Wigan Warriors Rugby Club. This event will feature the US doctor who has been instrumental in providing information, and he will meet with families affected by GAND to answer questions and share valuable knowledge.
Future Goals and Community Support
Looking ahead, the charity has ambitious plans to enhance awareness and care for GAND in the UK. Key objectives include:
- Educating the UK medical profession about GAND to improve diagnosis and treatment.
- Enhancing early intervention support for children with the disorder.
- Funding research efforts to better understand and combat GAND.
