A dedicated veterinary team from Kent has delivered a significant boost to Cancer Research UK, raising an impressive £3,683 by taking on a nocturnal charity challenge in the capital.
A Night to Remember in London
Staff from Elands Veterinary Clinic in Dunton Green, Sevenoaks, were joined by partners and former colleagues for the Shine Night Walk for Cancer Research UK. The team embarked on their journey from Battersea Park, navigating a route through the illuminated streets of London and crossing the finish line after 4 hours and 23 minutes.
This year's event marked the practice's second participation, and their efforts saw them double the amount they raised the previous year.
Overwhelming Generosity Fuels Success
The fundraising total was powered by generous donations from clients, colleagues, and friends, which amassed £3,133. This sum was further bolstered by a £500 donation from VetPartners, the wider veterinary group that Elands Vets belongs to, through its charity donation matching scheme.
Tina Bosworth, a receptionist at Elands Vets, described the honour of walking alongside thousands of people, all with personal motivations. "We were overwhelmed with the generosity of everyone who supported us," she said. "To have raised so much certainly made the late night and all the blisters well worth it! Every single pound will make such a difference to Cancer Research UK."
Team Spirit and Taylor Swift See Them Through
Tina also highlighted the incredible atmosphere of the event. "Walking amongst thousands of people who all had their own personal reasons for taking part was humbling and uplifting," she shared, noting the moving messages participants displayed.
The team's morale was tested in the final hour, but their camaraderie shone through. "Our team stayed motivated by chatting and eating snacks, and when everyone was really flagging we started singing along to Taylor Swift songs," Tina revealed. "This really helped lifted our spirits and our vets Anna, Iona and Charlotte even danced over the finish line."
Charlotte Surridge, a vet and clinical director at Elands Vets, praised her team's family-like bond. "We’re absolutely delighted that so many people dug deep to support us," she said, adding that the fun began with the train journey to London, where they decorated themselves with glow-in-the-dark tattoos and glitter.
