A senior business leader from the East of England is set to embark on one of the planet's most gruelling endurance tests to generate vital funds for a local hospice.
The Last Degree Challenge: A Polar Test of Endurance
Shaun Weston, the Managing Director of British Offsite, will commence The Last Degree Challenge on January 4. This formidable undertaking involves a seven-day, 100-kilometre ski expedition across the frozen expanse of Antarctica, journeying from 89 degrees south to the geographic South Pole.
His team will first travel to Punta Arenas in Chile, before a specialised flight deposits them deep into the heart of the Antarctic continent. From that remote starting point, Shaun will be left on the ice with his skis and survival gear to tackle the final, punishing stretch to the Pole in what is widely considered one of Earth's most hostile environments.
Driven by a Cause Close to Home
Shaun's motivation stems from his long-standing connection to St Clare Hospice, which serves communities including Harlow, Epping Forest, Uttlesford, Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth. "I've been fortunate to work with St Clare Hospice for several years now," Shaun reflected. "The hospice delivers not just care, but as much normality and quality of life as possible for patients and their families, right until the end."
He combined his personal ambition with his philanthropic goal, stating: "As a thrill-seeker, I wanted to do something for the hospice that would truly push me to my absolute limits, both physically and mentally. This will be a journey of hardship and dedication, but we are committed to seeing it through."
He also expressed profound gratitude for the support enabling the mission: "An expedition of this scale demands immense planning and resources. We simply couldn't do it without the incredible generosity of our patrons."
Fundraising Success and Lifesaving Impact
Shaun's efforts have already made a significant impact. Through a series of dynamic events held throughout 2025—including a family fun walk, a charity golf day, a boxing spar-a-thon, hiking the Yorkshire Three Peaks, and a gala dinner—he has raised over £100,000.
St Clare Hospice has highlighted that this sum alone could fund an entire month of specialist Therapy Team care. This service provides crucial physiotherapy and occupational therapy, helping patients regain strength, independence, and confidence during immensely challenging times.
Amy Winehouse, Head of Relationship Fundraising at St Clare Hospice, praised the endeavour: "We are in awe of Shaun's incredible dedication. Skiing 100km to the South Pole over seven days is an extraordinary commitment in an extreme environment. His determination to take on such a formidable challenge for our hospice is truly inspiring."
She added, "Shaun and everyone at British Offsite supporting this challenge are making a life-changing difference for the people we care for. We are so grateful for his courage and unwavering commitment."
