Sunshine Superstars Ernie and Evelyn Take on Clarty Bairns
Seven-year-old Ernie and his five-year-old sister Evelyn are raising funds for the Sunshine Fund by participating in Clarty Bairns, a family-friendly muddy obstacle course organised by Challenge Northumberland at Hedley West Farm in County Durham next month. The siblings aim to raise £500 to support other local children with additional needs with specialist equipment.
Ernie's Story and the Playframe
Ernie has a diagnosis of Autism, a hypoxic brain injury acquired from birth, and is on the pathway for an ADHD diagnosis. He is a high-energy child with sensory needs, and his family and teachers saw a positive change in his behaviour after a trial of a climbing frame at school. At the end of last year, the Sunshine Fund funded a playframe for the family's garden, providing Ernie a safe and accessible way to play, develop strength and coordination, and have fun with his sister, especially during warm weather.
Giving Back to the Charity
Their mother, Lauren, said: “Clarty Bairns describes my children perfectly! They're always outdoors, getting muddy and exploring, so when we saw the event it felt like a great fit for our family. We originally signed up just for fun, but it was actually Ernie and Evelyn's idea to raise money for charity alongside taking part. Even at just seven and five years old, they're both incredibly thoughtful and caring. Choosing the Sunshine Fund was an easy decision. We had such an amazing experience with the charity and the support we've received has been incredible. When we learned they could help fund Ernie's playframe, it was a complete no-brainer for us to give something back and help other families who may need support in the future.”
The duo has already raised more than 75% of their target, which will make a significant difference to other children in the region who need specialist or adapted equipment to improve their wellbeing and daily lives.
Upcoming Zipline Challenge
For thrill-seekers, the Sunshine Fund is working with Jelly Legs on a zipline across the Tyne. Participants will be lifted 150ft in the air to the launch platform before soaring 350m across the river to Baltic Square. Spaces cost £40 each, with a minimum fundraising requirement of £50. The event takes place on Friday 21st August at 4pm. To book, visit www.thesunshinefund.org/zip.
Next Week's Column
Next week's column will feature a local mother opening a shop selling baked goods, inspired by her daughter Millie who has additional needs and loves sweet treats. The shop opens this weekend at Paramount Gym in Bedlington, with a raffle featuring fantastic prizes, with all proceeds going to the Sunshine Fund.
