St Albans Father and Son Team Up for London Marathon Charity Run
A dedicated resident from St Albans is gearing up to participate in the London Marathon this April, aiming to support all individuals impacted by cancer. Steve Phillips decided to embark on this running challenge after being inspired by his mother's remarkable courage during her four-year fight against four distinct types of the disease. He is raising crucial funds for The Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR), an internationally renowned charity focused on conquering cancer.
A Family Tribute to Resilience
This endeavor is a heartfelt family effort, as Steve will be joined by his 18-year-old son, Ethan, to honor the strength of his mother. Annette Phillips, aged 73, has undergone several major surgeries since 2022 to address breast, kidney, and lung cancers. Initially declared in remission, a recent scan revealed she now has Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, which she is managing with an optimistic attitude.
Steve expressed, "My mum's strength, resilience and determination to keep fighting inspire me every day. But sadly, too many families have to face similar challenges." He emphasizes that additional research is essential to fully comprehend and ultimately overcome the complexities of cancer. Steve added, "Without further research, we will not be able to push forward in making new discoveries needed to unlock the complexities and nuances within the ecosystem of cancer."
An Ambitious Goal for a Special Occasion
While Steve is a seasoned athlete with ten marathons and six Ironman competitions completed, this event marks Ethan's debut full marathon. The duo chose to tackle the 26.2-mile course together to commemorate Steve's 50th birthday and Ethan's 18th birthday this year. They have set a challenging target to finish in under two hours and 50 minutes while raising £5,000 for the ICR.
Steve shared, "Nothing would make me prouder than to support an amazing charity and to cross the finish line at the 2026 London Marathon together with my son — with my incredible mum, family and friends all there cheering us on." The charity has acknowledged their dedication and enthusiasm for the cause.
Charity's Gratitude and Call for Support
Rachael Potter from The Institute of Cancer Research stated, "Every pound raised helps drive our research forward, and every mile brings us closer to a future where cancer can be defeated." To assist Steve and Ethan in their mission, donations can be made through their official fundraising page.
