St Luke's Hospice Launches Blue Heart Appeal to Sustain Vital Palliative Care
St Luke's Hospice is urgently calling on the local community to rally behind its essential services through a new fundraising initiative. The appeal encourages individuals to donate and purchase a symbolic blue heart garden ornament, designed to help continue the hospice's compassionate care for thousands of people who depend on its support annually.
The blue hearts serve as a powerful emblem of the collective impact of caring together. With escalating operational costs and a surge in demand for specialised palliative and end-of-life care, community support has become more critical than ever. St Luke's Hospice provides free, empathetic care solely through the generosity of local residents, volunteers, businesses, and organisations, all uniting in a shared mission of compassion.
A Family's Journey: The Impact of Hospice Care
The profound effect of this community backing is vividly illustrated in the experience of families like that of Natalie (Nat) Sansom. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, Nat later developed secondary breast cancer and began receiving care from St Luke's Hospice in 2023.
Her husband, Chris Sansom, recounts: "Nat required regular treatments and IV infusions, initially travelling a considerable distance to a hospital every fortnight. After connecting with the team at St Luke's Hospice, her treatment was relocated there, significantly easing our daily lives."
"Maintaining her independence and continuing her role as a beloved primary school headteacher, while being an incredible mother to our two sons, was paramount for Nat. The outpatient appointments at the hospice enabled her to achieve this. Nat described it as a precious gift."
"She persevered in her work until the day before admission to the hospice's In-Patient Unit. The interdisciplinary teams collaborated seamlessly to help Nat live life to its fullest, addressing her needs while also supporting me and our sons, Kyan and Woody."
"We benefited from comprehensive care involving nurses from the Clinical Outpatients team, hospice doctors, and the In-Patient Unit staff. Additional resources, such as volunteer Bedside Companions and specialist physiotherapists, were readily available when required."
"Beyond receiving expert medical attention, the hospice empowered our sons and me to actively participate in Nat's care, fulfilling a personal desire of mine. We always felt secure, knowing that skilled professionals were on hand if needed. We were confident we were in the best possible care."
"Nat cherished life fiercely. She was independent and truly inspirational—a wonderful, kind, and loving individual. She never allowed her treatment or illness to define her, and the hospice's support was instrumental in making this resilience possible."
Symbol of Hope: The Blue Heart Garden Ornament
Nat's narrative underscores why it is imperative for St Luke's Hospice to persist in delivering its services to those in need, motivating the charity's appeal for community solidarity.
Eileen Marshall, CEO of St Luke's Hospice, emphasised: "This represents a pivotal juncture for our hospice. Demand for our services is continuously expanding, while the expenses associated with providing care are rising substantially."
"We are profoundly thankful for the steadfast support of our local community—without you, our mission would be impossible. By acquiring a blue heart ornament and contributing donations, you are standing alongside us, ensuring we can continue to care for the most vulnerable individuals."
Hundreds of these blue heart ornaments will be showcased at the hospice's Summer Garden Party, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, from noon to 4 pm at its Thurrock Hospice location. This event offers a delightful afternoon featuring entertainment, stalls, food, and refreshments suitable for the entire family, with free admission for all attendees.
