A friendly group of vintage vehicle enthusiasts from West Wales is going the extra mile for charity this summer. The Cardi Cranks, a classic vehicle club from Ceredigion, have been loyal supporters of Cancer Research Wales since 2025. They are passionate about restoring old machinery and will be driving two vintage tractors 529 miles around Wales to raise funds this June.
The Tractors: Sion and Sian
The members have lovingly restored the tractors, named Sion and Sian, and painted them in the charity’s signature colours for the event. The ‘Sion and Sian Tractor Run’ will see the Ferguson tractors travel from Caernarfon Castle to Cardiff Castle starting on Sunday, June 21.
Route Details
Over seven days, Sion will travel east through Betws-y-Coed and Llangollen before heading south via Welshpool and Builth Wells. At the same time, Sian will head south along the coast through Porthmadog, Dolgellau, and Aberystwyth before reaching Cardigan.
On the fifth day, Sion will move from Builth Wells through Brecon and Cwmbran to reach St Fagans. Sian will leave Cardigan on the same day, visiting St Clears and Swansea before meeting her counterpart at St Fagans. On Sunday, June 28, the pair will complete the final four miles of their adventure, arriving at Cardiff Castle at 11am.
Community Spirit
“We’re very excited to be taking on the Sion and Sian Tractor Challenge for Cancer Research Wales,” said Gill Evans from Cardi Cranks. “This is a heartwarming initiative dedicated to restoring two charming little grey Ferguson tractors. These vintage machines, with their rich history and character, are not just being brought back to life; they are set to embark on an inspiring journey across the beautiful landscapes of Wales. Each turn of the wheel will not only showcase the craftsmanship involved in the restoration but also serve a greater purpose—raising vital funds for Cancer Research Wales. This project is a perfect blend of nostalgia, community spirit, and a commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer. Look out for us later this June and help us to fundraise and spread awareness of the work of Cancer Research Wales and the hope they bring along the way. Together, we can drive change and contribute to vital cancer research that impacts countless lives.”
The Young Farmers Club Wales will support the team along the route as part of their partnership with the charity.
Charity Support
Adam Fletcher, Chief Executive Officer of Cancer Research Wales, said: “Here at Cancer Research Wales, we feel very privileged to call the Cardi Cranks our friends. They’ve got engine oil running through their veins; hearts of pure gold; seemingly endless levels of ingenuity, drive and enthusiasm; and they are also very kind and warm people. I am overwhelmed by the support they are showing towards Cancer Research Wales and our mission of uniting Wales against cancer, with this very ambitious adventure – the Sion and Sian Tractor Run. The planning and logistics involved are mind-blowing, and doubtless there’ll be some sleepless nights ahead, but I know in my heart the Cardi Cranks with the support of the Young Farmers Club of Wales will do this.”
Residents can support the journey and donate to the cause via the Cardi Cranks’ official JustGiving page.
