A dedicated Wrexham carer who has never run a race in her life is preparing for a festive 5k challenge, complete with a full elf costume. Mary Prytherch, 55, from Pentre Broughton, is stepping far outside her comfort zone to support two vital causes.
From Care Home to Countryside Course
Mary Prytherch has worked as a carer at the Pendine Park care organisation for over two decades. Between her shifts, she has been diligently training for the Christmas Fun Run, admitting she is nervous but determined. "I go to the gym but have never run in my life," Mary said. "My training has been very slow and steady, so I am hoping to be ready on the big day."
The event is the brainchild of Jess Dubash, Mary's son's girlfriend, who runs the newly-formed Sisterhood Society Run Club. The club's inaugural festive run will take place on Sunday, December 7. The 5km route starts and finishes at Hickory's in Wrexham, winding through the scenic Erddig countryside and into the National Trust estate.
Double Charity Boost and Festive Fun
All funds raised will be split between two charities: Alzheimer's Society and Children with Cancer UK. Jess chose Alzheimer's Society in memory of her nanna, Valerie Dubash, who battled dementia. Club member Rachel Ward helped select the causes, and both women are also in training for marathons next year.
Mary emphasised the personal connection: "We look after many patients with Alzheimer's at Pendine, so I can see how important it is that money is raised for the charity." She added that her colleagues have been incredibly supportive with donations.
To amplify the festive spirit, participants are encouraged to wear Christmas jumpers, Santa hats, or full costumes. Mary will be sporting a specially-made elf outfit created by Pendine's artist-in-residence, Sarah Edwards. "We are all very proud of Mary," Sarah said. "She brightens up everyone's day."
Event Details and Community Spirit
The event is designed as a fun, non-competitive morning for all ages and abilities, welcoming runners, joggers, and walkers. Marshals and volunteer photographers will be on hand to guide and capture the event. Every finisher will receive a Santa medal.
After the run, Hickory's will host a festive tombola and bake sale in their barn area, with all additional funds going to the charities. Tickets cost £10 per person and are available via Eventbrite, with more details on the Sisterhood Society Run Club's Instagram page @sisterhoodrunclub. The run begins at 10am.
Mary summed up the community feeling: "It's going to be a brilliant day and a lot of fun. I am nervous but am looking forward to it."
