A long-serving Cardiff volunteer has been recognised in The King's Birthday Honours 2026. Sudha Bhatt, who has lived in the city for 40 years, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her services to community cohesion in Wales.
Originally from Mombasa in Kenya, Mrs Bhatt is a former civil servant of 37 years, as well as a mother of two and grandmother of four.
Honouring History
She is well known across Cardiff's Hindu and multi-faith communities, where she has spent more than three decades supporting local people and bringing communities together. Mrs Bhatt currently serves as assistant secretary of the Sanatan Dharma Mandal and Hindu Community Centre in Cardiff, and is vice chair of the Hindu Council of Wales. Over the years, she has helped organise festivals and events attended by hundreds of people.
Interfaith Work
She has also played a key role in interfaith work, delivering talks in schools, to public organisations and to groups including Police Cadets and the Armed Forces. She previously helped present Diwali celebrations at the Senedd, bringing together community leaders and Members of the Senedd.
Supporting Older Residents
Closer to home, she has been instrumental in supporting older residents through the Temple's Elderly Day Centre, which offers companionship and practical support to those facing loneliness or language barriers.
Community Health Champion
Since retiring, Mrs Bhatt has also trained as a Community Health Champion, raising awareness of issues such as dementia, stroke prevention and heart disease within South Asian communities. She is also involved in fundraising for local charities, supporting causes including cancer research and services for people with sight loss.
Speaking about the award, Mrs Bhatt said she felt 'deeply honoured'. She added: "It has been a privilege to serve the community alongside so many dedicated volunteers and organisations over the years. This recognition belongs to everyone who has worked together to strengthen community spirit and promote understanding between people of all backgrounds."
