A dedicated monthly club for Middlesbrough's military community is gearing up for its first full year of operation, having already attracted a significant surge in local interest. The Veterans & Armed Forces Community Club, which provides a vital social space for former and current service personnel, launched last autumn and is now preparing a schedule of meetings stretching into the spring.
A Growing Hub for Connection and Support
The initiative, which holds its meetings at the Station Suites on Linthorpe Road, saw more than 20 new faces attend its inaugural session. It aims to combat isolation by offering a relaxed Friday morning environment where people with shared military backgrounds can connect over breakfast. The club is supported by major organisations including The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes, alongside Middlesbrough Council’s Staying Included Service.
Linda Ford, the Staying Included officer, expressed strong optimism for the group's future following the successful initial turnout. “We’ve had a great turn-out so far, and I’m sure numbers will continue to grow as word spreads,” she said. “Meetings are lined up until March and we hope to continue for as long as people want.” She confirmed the club is ready to expand its reach as awareness of the sessions increases.
Practical Details and How to Get Involved
The club meets on the first Friday of every month from 10am until noon, offering tea, coffee, and bacon sandwiches. The upcoming confirmed sessions are scheduled for:
- Friday, January 9
- Friday, February 6
- Friday, March 6
The venue at 5 Linthorpe Road (TS1 1RE) is conveniently located directly opposite Middlesbrough train station, ensuring easy access. The gatherings provide a chance for veterans and service personnel to socialise and learn about the range of services and support available to them.
Building Momentum in the Community
With momentum steadily building, organisers have planned ahead to meet local demand. The project represents a key community effort to ensure those who have served are not left isolated.
