Major Cannabis Farm Uncovered in Former Droitwich Bank
Police have uncovered a substantial cannabis cultivation operation with an estimated street value exceeding £100,000 inside a disused bank building on Droitwich's bustling high street. The discovery was made during a targeted raid on Wednesday morning, following multiple reports from concerned local residents about a strong and persistent cannabis odour emanating from the vacant premises.
Raids and Arrests in Victoria Square
Officers from West Mercia Police executed a warrant at the former HSBC branch located on Victoria Square at approximately 8:50 am. Footage from the scene shows police forcing entry into the derelict building, where they proceeded to discover around 200 mature cannabis plants being cultivated across two separate storeys of the property. A 34-year-old man, who was found inside the premises at the time of the raid, was promptly arrested on suspicion of cannabis production and remains in police custody for questioning.
The location of this illicit operation is particularly notable, situated in the very heart of Droitwich town centre and less than a mile from the local police station. This proximity to law enforcement highlights the audacity of those involved in the criminal enterprise. The raid attracted a small crowd of spectators from around the square, with several onlookers expressing little surprise at the discovery.
Community Intelligence Leads to Discovery
Inspector Lisa Hornberger of West Mercia Police emphasised the critical role played by public information in this case. "This warrant should serve as a clear reminder that we will act on information from the public and take robust action against those involved in drug production in our town," she stated. "Cannabis cultivation is not a victimless crime; it can be linked to wider criminality and poses real risks, including significant fire hazards and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals."
Local residents had grown increasingly suspicious due to the potent smell of cannabis permeating the area. One resident commented, "I knew there must have been one [a cannabis grow], I could smell it constantly." Another spectator remarked on the frequency of such discoveries, noting, "Another one? There was one just down the road not too long ago."
A Recurring Problem in Droitwich
This incident marks the fourth cannabis cultivation operation uncovered within Droitwich town centre since September 2024, indicating a persistent local issue with drug production. Just last month, police discovered another smaller-scale operation involving 50 plants and sophisticated growing equipment in a property on Coleman Road, which is also located a short distance from Droitwich Police Station.
The police have reiterated their commitment to tackling drug-related crime and have urged the public to continue reporting any suspicions. "We encourage anyone with concerns about drug production or supply to report them so we can continue to act and ensure Droitwich remains a safe place for everyone," Inspector Hornberger added. The investigation into this latest discovery remains ongoing as officers work to dismantle the operation and pursue any further lines of enquiry.
