Derby Evacuation: 200 Homes Cleared as Army Explosives Team Deployed
200 Derby homes evacuated in explosives scare

A major incident has been declared in Derby, leading to the precautionary evacuation of more than 200 homes after police discovered suspected explosive materials at an address.

Large-Scale Precautionary Evacuation

Derbyshire Police, acting on intelligence, executed a warrant at a property on Vulcan Street on Wednesday, 4 December 2025. This prompted the immediate establishment of a significant cordon and evacuation zone. Officers went door-to-door to ensure residents left their properties.

The force emphasised that the operation was a precaution and stated clearly: "This is not being investigated as a terrorism incident, there is no wider risk to the community." Residents were advised to prepare to be away from their homes for up to 24 hours and to make necessary arrangements for medications and pets.

Arrests and Army Bomb Disposal Called In

As part of the operation, police arrested two men – one in his 40s and another in his 50s – on suspicion of explosives offences. Both remain in police custody. The situation required specialist support, leading to the deployment of the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

At approximately 3:20 pm, authorities warned evacuated residents that they might hear "a bang" as the Army experts carried out controlled work as part of their disposal operation.

Affected Streets and Multi-Agency Response

The evacuation encompassed a substantial area around Vulcan Street. The full list of affected streets includes:

  • The entirety of Shaftsbury Crescent, Vulcan Street, and Reeves Road.
  • Harrington Street – from Holcombe Street to Vulcan Street.
  • Baseball Drive – to Colombo Street.
  • Cambridge Street – at Reeves Road and Shaftesbury Crescent.

The response is being coordinated as a multi-agency effort, with Derbyshire Police working alongside Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and Derby City Council.

The incident remains ongoing, with the primary focus on ensuring public safety while specialist teams make the address safe.
