Birmingham Man Ambushed, Kidnapped and Bundled into Car Boot, Court Hears
A man from Birmingham was violently attacked, bundled into the boot of a car and kidnapped following a premeditated ambush, Birmingham Crown Court has heard. The shocking incident unfolded in the Alum Rock area, with prosecutors detailing a planned and determined assault by a group of six men.
Violent Attack on Red Mercedes
The victim was driving a red Mercedes with two passengers when they were targeted on Rogers Road in Alum Rock shortly after midnight on June 5, 2024. "They waited in a road and shortly after midnight they carried out a violent attack on three other men travelling in a red car," prosecutor Jenny Josephs KC told the jury.
CCTV evidence showed the attackers armed with metal poles and batons confronting the occupants of the Mercedes. The windows were smashed and all three men inside sustained injuries before the driver was dragged away and placed into the boot of one of the assailants' vehicles.
Home Address Vandalized in Search
From the scene, the kidnapped man was taken to his own home address in Hodge Hill. The attackers forced the front door open and proceeded to smash up the property. "They were intent on finding or taking something. It seems they didn't find it," Ms Josephs stated.
Remarkably, the victim was later released after the group encountered his brother. "Whatever these men planned appears to have failed," the prosecutor added, though the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Failed Attempts and Meticulous Planning
The court heard astonishing details about the attackers' preparation and persistence. "Quite astonishingly before they started to attack the red car they had actually started to attack two other cars before realising they had got the wrong car," Ms Josephs revealed.
The prosecutor continued: "That didn't stop them. They zoned in on a car, realised they had got the wrong one, regrouped and tried again. The third time they got the right car."
Evidence presented showed the group had gathered in advance, armed with weapons, and had taken steps to prepare including having windows tinted on two of their vehicles earlier the same day. They used three cars of their own to carry out the ambush.
Sixth Defendant on Trial
Five men have already been convicted for their involvement in the incident. Now Safyaan Baga, 22, of Kenwood Road in Hodge Hill, stands trial as the alleged sixth member of the group.
Baga denies three charges of wounding with intent, kidnapping, aggravated burglary and possession of an offensive weapon in public. "The issue for them to decide was 'whether Safyaan Baga was one of those six men'," Ms Josephs told the jury.
Prosecutors presented evidence including CCTV footage of Baga being picked up and dropped off at home, telephone contact with other group members, and cell-site analysis placing his phone at the relevant locations during the incident.
Ms Josephs emphasized to the jury that there was 'no doubt' the offences took place due to the earlier convictions, leaving them to determine Baga's specific involvement in the violent events.
