A 16-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after being shot in Alum Rock, Birmingham, on Wednesday evening, part of a 20-hour wave of violence that saw three major incidents across the region. West Midlands Police rushed to Bowyer Road shortly before 5.30pm on July 1 after reports of a shooting. The teenager was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Stabbing in Bartley Green
Just minutes after the Alum Rock shooting, at around 5.40pm on the same day, a man was stabbed outside a row of shops in Bartley Green. Police confirmed his injuries were serious but not life-threatening. The quick succession of incidents prompted a heightened police presence in both areas.
Oldbury Stabbing Leaves Teenager Critical
The following afternoon, a major incident was declared in Oldbury town centre. A 19-year-old man was stabbed at 12.15pm on Thursday, July 2, following an altercation between a group of teenagers on Church Street. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. West Midlands Police said the scene remained cordoned off for several hours as forensic examinations were carried out.
These incidents follow a series of violent attacks in June. On June 11, two men were stabbed outside Birmingham's main library in Centenary Square. One man, in his 20s, suffered potentially life-threatening wounds, while the second man had a hand injury. Police said the attack was not random and involved a targeted altercation.
Police Response and Public Concern
West Midlands Police have appealed for witnesses and urged anyone with information to come forward. Detective Inspector Jim Colclough, from the force's Major Crime Unit, said: "We are in the early stages of our investigations and are working tirelessly to establish the full circumstances. We understand the concern these incidents cause in the community, and we have increased patrols in affected areas."
The violence has sparked renewed fears over serious crime in the region. Local councillors have called for urgent action, including better youth services and more police on the streets. The incidents also come amid wider concerns about knife and gun crime in Birmingham, which saw a 12% increase in knife offences in the year to March 2026, according to Office for National Statistics data.
Community Impact
Residents in Alum Rock described hearing a loud bang before seeing police cars swarm the area. One local shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said: "It's frightening. This used to be a quiet street, but now we hear about shootings and stabbings all the time. We need more police and more support for young people." In Oldbury, a cordon remained in place on Church Street for much of Thursday, disrupting local businesses and traffic.
West Midlands Police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the Alum Rock shooting or the Oldbury stabbing. The Bartley Green stabbing investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
