Dangerous driver jailed for killing pedestrian in Oldbury

A dangerous driver who killed an innocent pedestrian after reaching speeds of more than 70mph in a 40mph zone has been jailed for six years.

Fatal collision on Birmingham Road

The incident occurred on August 6, just before 9.20pm, on Birmingham Road in Oldbury. Muazzam Luqman, then 22, was behind the wheel of a red Vauxhall Astra when he ploughed into a 54-year-old woman who was crossing the road.

The victim, who had been walking along the pavement, suffered catastrophic injuries. Despite the immediate efforts of emergency paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrest and court proceedings

Luqman, of Blakeley Hall Road in Oldbury, initially fled the scene but later returned, where he was arrested by police. He was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

At Wolverhampton Crown Court, Luqman pleaded guilty to the offence. The court heard how he had disregarded the speed limit, travelling at excessively high speeds in a built-up area.

As a result of his actions, the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. He was also handed an eight-year driving ban, which will commence upon his release.

Police statement and public warning

Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Julie Lyman from the West Midlands Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Luqman disregarded the speed limit, which cost an innocent woman her life. He will now spend years behind bars and is disqualified from driving for eight years. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s loved ones.”

The force issued a stark reminder to all motorists about their responsibility to drive safely. A spokesperson urged drivers to make smart choices and consider the consequences of their actions behind the wheel.

“Everyone has a responsibility to drive safely,” the spokesperson stated. “That means making smart choices, thinking about the consequences, and encouraging friends and family to do the same. The message is clear - if you put others at risk, you will be caught and dealt with.”
