A man has tragically died after an alleged assault inside a fish and chip shop in Merseyside. The victim has been identified locally as 54-year-old Carl Ennis, a father known affectionately as 'Scully' by friends and family.

Details of the Incident

The altercation is reported to have occurred at The Village Chippy in the Stockbridge Village area. Mr Ennis left the establishment around 7:30 PM on Friday, April 17, following the incident. He later sought medical attention at a hospital for a head injury but sadly passed away on Tuesday, April 21.

Merseyside Police have confirmed that their investigation into the assault has been upgraded to a murder probe. A 25-year-old man from Stockbridge Village, who was initially arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent, remains on conditional bail as inquiries continue.

Community Tributes and Reactions

Friends and residents have expressed their grief and shared heartfelt memories of Mr Ennis. Jackie Jones posted on Facebook, "We shared so many happy and adventurous times growing up. You were one of the truest people I ever had the privilege to be around. You will be sadly missed. Forever in all our hearts."

Shirley Jones described Carl as a "lovely fella," while Toni May Edwards added, "So very saddened to hear this sad news. Thinking of you all." Locals remembered him as a familiar and friendly face in the area, often greeting passersby with a smile.

One community member stated, "It's so sad what happened. I only knew of him, really, but he'd always shout hello every time he saw me. He was a lovely lad."

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Chief Inspector Cath Cummings, the investigating officer, emphasized, "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this tragic time. I know people living in the local community will be understandably upset and concerned, but I want them to be reassured that we are thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident."

She continued, "A murder investigation is now underway and we are appealing for information. We know there were people inside The Village Chippy at the time, so if you haven’t already done so, please come forward if you have information." Authorities are urging anyone with details to contact them promptly to assist in the ongoing investigation.
