Motorists in Cambridgeshire are set to face immediate fines for dangerous and disruptive behaviour at a key transport site, as new powers receive the green light.
Overwhelming Public Backing for Crackdown
Plans to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour at the Milton Park and Ride have been officially approved following a public consultation. The results revealed strong community support, with 125 people participating. An overwhelming 118 residents voted in favour of implementing tougher measures to address the issues plaguing the site.
Councillor Natalie Warren-Green, Lead Cabinet Member for Environment, stated: "We're really pleased with the level of public engagement. The message is clear - people want action." She emphasised that the site should be a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
What the New Powers Mean for Drivers
The newly approved Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) grants authorities the ability to issue fixed penalty notices for a first offence. This is a significant shift, designed to act as a deterrent.
Reported problems that prompted the order include:
- Speeding cars and motorbikes
- Revving engines and racing
- Performing stunts
- Playing loud music
- Threatening or rude behaviour
Councillor Anna Bradnam, South Cambridgeshire district councillor for Milton, commented: "Residents have been disturbed by anti-social driving late at night and weekend after weekend. This Order makes it easier to stop disturbances quickly... it will nip bad behaviour in the bud."
A Swift Response to Community Concerns
The core purpose of a PSPO is to address activities that have a detrimental effect on the quality of life for local residents, where the behaviour is persistent. The restrictions imposed must be justified to prevent or reduce this negative impact.
With the consultation complete and the order issued, the council is now moving forward with the implementation of these new enforcement measures at the Milton Park and Ride.
