Mother Targeted While Breastfeeding at Airport
An opportunistic thief stole luggage from a vulnerable mother while she was breastfeeding her young daughter at Gatwick Airport. The incident occurred on October 30 in the south terminal's baby care room, where the mother-of-two had gone to feed her infant.
The Opportunistic Crime
Prosecutor Amy Fraser explained to Crawley Magistrates' Court that due to the room's layout, the mother couldn't bring her pram and luggage inside, so she left them just outside the door. John Brooks, 52, who appeared to be drunk, arrived and stood by her luggage trolley for a short time before taking it and fleeing the area.
The court heard how Brooks went through the taxi area and down to the car park exit. When he couldn't get past the security barrier, he used his head to force it open, causing £88.30 worth of criminal damage to the equipment.
Impact on the Family and Legal Outcome
In a victim statement, the mother revealed the profound emotional impact of the crime. She now feels insecure in public spaces, and her eight-year-old daughter has developed new fears about the world around them. The experience has changed how the family travels and interacts in public.
Brooks, of Brighton Road, Crawley, appeared in court on Tuesday, November 25, wearing an orange coat under a black gilet. He spoke only to confirm his personal details. The court learned he has 37 previous convictions for 72 offences, with 42 relating to theft.
Magistrates fined Brooks £388.30 and ordered him to pay £300 in compensation to the victim plus £88.30 for the damaged security barrier. Fortunately, the mother's luggage was later recovered and returned to her.
